What is VALORBIO about?

VALORBIO develops an innovative circular bioeconomy solution that transforms agri-food wastewater into sustainable bioplastics for food packaging. It integrates wastewater treatment, biopolymer production, and bioplastic biodegradation into a fully circular approach to addressing a pressing environmental challenge. The project supports the transition to a circular economy by creating new industrial opportunities and helping to reduce plastic pollution.

Objectives

  • Increase Biopolymer Production: Through optimized operational parameters
  • Elucidate Key Metabolic Pathways: With advanced omics techniques to determine the regulatory mechanisms
  • Develop Bio-based Solvents: From renewable resources that can dissolve and blend PHA and EPS
  • Establish a Scalable Process: By optimizing the conversion of PHA-EPS biopolymers into bioplastic films and coatings
  • Enhance the Degradability of PHA-EPS: With short and long-term degradation studies to assess anaerobic biodegradation
  • Analyse the Process Sustainability: With a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify the various impacts
